What Is a Pom Pom?

A pom pom is a round ball of material that is usually used to form some kind of decoration or embellishment. You can buy pom poms ready made, but these DIY pom poms are so much more fun, plus if you’re making your own you can pick the colours, materials, size, end shape and style to fit the exact project you’re working on.

In short, pom poms are what you make them! They can be the central element of your design, or simply used to add a pop of colour, texture or interest to a bigger project. In this project, I’ve made simple pom poms out of yarn, which is a brilliant way to use up any extra pieces you have from knitting or crochet projects in the past.

What You’ll Need to Make DIY Pom Poms

A Pom Pom Maker: There are a number of different ways to make simple DIY pom poms, but if it’s something that you’re going to be doing a lot I seriously suggest investing a very small amount of money into a pom pom maker. If you are itching to get started though and don’t have one on hand, here is a great tutorial on making your own cardboard pom pom maker quickly at home.

For this tutorial, I’ve used a pom pom maker from Hobycraft but the steps fit for the vast majority of pom pom makers out there.

Scissors: You’ll also need a small, sharp pair of scissors. You can buy small craft scissors like these ones, or simply use a pair of nail scissors instead.

Yarn: Depending on your project, you’ll need to pick your yarn accordingly. If you’re making a pom pom blanket for example, you may need a higher quality yarn, whereas a simple pom pom bunting project might simply call for some cheap acrylic – it’s entirely up to you and the style of project you’re working towards. If you’re trying to keep costs down, Amazon have brilliant sets of cheap yarn on Prime!

Materials

Instructions

1. Hold the two halves of your pom pom maker together so that the groves slot together. With the wool still attached to your yarn ball, wrap it around one half of the pom pom maker.

2. Continue wrapping the yarn until you have a semi circle.

3. With the yarn still attached to the ball wrap it around the other half of the pom pom maker until the two halves are even. Close the pom pom maker and clip it together securely.

4. Using your sharp scissors, cut down the centre of each half on your pom pom maker.

5. Once you have cut down both sides of the pom pom maker, cut one piece of yarn and tie it tightly around the middle of the pom pom.

6. Unclip the pom pom maker and remove it from the pom pom. You'll now have a slightly roughly shaped pom pom to trim.

7. Trim your pom pom with your scissors until you have the desired shape. The shorter you trim it the tighter your pom pom will look. I have gone for a more loose pom pom here as they'll be used for a garland.

Notes

One pom pom should take around five minutes depending on the size and amount of yarn you need to wrap. The smaller the pom pom, the less time it will take.
